Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman have each has been awarded an $18 million contract for Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) Phase 1.3 while L3Harris Mustang Technology Group receives $17.7 million for the same.
This contract provides for all activities associated with the statement of objectives as well as the contractor's proposal for Phase 1.3. Work will be performed in Orlando, Florida, and is expected to be complete by Aug. 26, 2023, a Pentagon contracts announcement said Monday.
The three defense contractors are competing for the U.S.A.F's next generation air-to-ground weapon of which the service plans to field some 3000 SiAWs over a 10 year period, according to various media reports.
SiAW will be launched from F-35 fighter jet in anti-access/area denial environments to strike mobile targets, including enemy missile launchers, GPS jammers, anti-satellite systems, and integrated air defense systems. It is considered an upgrade of the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range (AARGM-ER).
Lockheed Martin said in June 2022, “SiAW is an air-to-ground weapon that will provide strike capability against a variety of targets, and maintain superiority and freedom to maneuver in the air domain."
“The first phase of the SiAW program will focus on digital engineering, subsystem integration and system design, and will also emphasize agility and innovation. The digital SiAW program will produce a survivable, lethal and high-speed weapon for current and fifth generation aircraft including the F-35 to attack ground targets.”
