Saab in Indian maritime reconnaissance aircraft race

In the burgeoning Indian market for military hardware, the latest big ticket acquisition planned is that of medium-range maritime reconnaissance (MRMR) aircraft. The Indian Navy had issued an RFP in 2009 and the procurement process has now gathered pace. Defenseworld.net spoke to Tommy Hultin and Peter Verebes, senior executives of Saab of Sweden which is one of the contenders in the MRMR race. Saab is making a fresh bid for the Indian market after it was not in the shortlist for the medium multi role combat aircraft(MMRCA) procurement.
DW : What is the unique feature of the aircraft that will make it stand out from the available competition?
Saab: The unique feature of the SAB 2000 is that it’s almost fully a SAAB product. That makes it easy to make any change to fit the user’s needs. The aircraft has only two items that are built by other countries. One is the Selex 7300 radar built by the Italian company and Star Sapphire Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer (FLIR) built by a US-based company. But if the Indian government wishes to have a different FLIR, we have European options ready for that.
