MBDA today announced that the Brimstone 2 missile will be evaluated for UK Typhoons.

The missile will later enter service with the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) on Tornado GR4s.

The missile has mmW radar and semi active laser Dual Mode Seeker capability, an Insensitive Munition (IM) rocket motor and warhead, and stronger airframe for increased air carriage robustness.

Tornado GR4 will benefit first whilst activities are also underway to assess Brimstone 2 for use on Typhoon. Following the award of a study contract to BAE Systems from UK MoD, on 18th June 2014 MBDA signed a contract with BAE Systems to support the evaluation of Typhoon integration of Brimstone 2.

BRIMSTONE is a precision attack weapon for the engagement of fast moving and maneuverings targets in high collateral risk environments, as in both Tornado GR4 and recent RPAS trials achieving direct hits against targets operating at high speeds.
