Peru To Upgrade Second MiG-29 Batch

Russian aircraft manufacturer, RAC MiG expects to sign a repair and modernization of a second batch of MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets contract with the Peruvian Air Force this year, Forecast International reported.

In August 2008, the Peruvian Defense Ministry awarded a contract worth $106 million to RAC MiG for upgrades to eight of the MiG-29s in inventory. All eight aircraft were returned to service by October 2012.

A second contract for the modernization of the remaining 11 in the fleet was expected to be signed last year, but has yet to happen. Korotkov is optimistic that an agreement will be signed before the end of 2014.

The upgrade will expand the aircraft's operational life by 20 years.

The initial batch of MiG-29s was upgraded to the SMT standard with new avionics, communications, and electronic countermeasures systems, as well as multifunction color displays and hands-on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controls. The radar was also upgraded to an N019 under the contract with Phazotron's Zhuk-ME technology.
