The Nigerian military has ordered 1000 Beryl assault rifles from Poland for delivery this month and could follow up with 5000 rifles more.

The rifles were ordered from Fabryka Broni Lucznik, Polish news agency PAP reported.

“I hope that our sale of the first 1000 rifles to Nigeria will send a signal that our weapons are worthy of interest,” said Tomasz Nita, chief executive of Fabryka Broni Lucznik.

Nigerian Army personnel are training in Radom, Poland, and added that this was the first time the weapons were being sold outside Poland.

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) produces small arms and ammunition for the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, and has produced an assault rifle similar to the AK-47 in addition to developing 60 and 81 mm mortars.

However, Nigeria still imports small arms, according to the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms. In 2013 Nigeria received 1,500 Serbian pistols and 2,270 Serbian light machineguns.
