Lockheed Martin Loses $3 Billion US Navy EW Contract To Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman has won US Navy's Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) contract worth up to $3billion beating Lockheed Martin, Syracuse.com reported Friday.

The US Navy has plans to install SEWIP systems across its fleet on all of its aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and amphibious assault ships.  The SEWIP is an by the navy to upgrade the fleet's electronic warfare capabilities against anti-ship missiles and other threats. The latest phase of the project will provide a common electronic attack capability.

The Navy announced Friday that it will award a contract worth up to $267 million to Northrop Grumman for the next phase of the $5.3 billion program. The program has a potential to bring $3 billion worth of work over 10 years to the winning contractor.

Lockheed Martin partnered with Raytheon for the competition against Northrop Grumman. This is the second time Lockheed has lost a high bid after it lost a bid for a USAF radar contract worth up to $1.3 billion over 10 years in October 2014.
