Hov Pod announced today that its new Carbon Infinity 120HP Turbo 7-seater hovercraft has completed its first field test.
The first carbon fibre hovercraft can pick up half a tonne in weight 1105 pounds or 500 Kgs from an on-water start subject to operating conditions. From land it will lift 1491 pounds or 675 Kgs in weight. Carbon Fibre is extremely tough yet very lightweight, so an ideal material to use for hovercraft construction. Other materials include Kevlar and HDPE.
Due to the lightweight properties of carbon fibre, the Hov Pod Carbon Infinity will weigh significantly less than traditional military hovercraft - by dividing price by on-water payload, it is easy to see that for the cost of the typical 7 seater hovercraft, 4 or 5 Carbon Infinity hovercraft could be purchased, according to the company press release.
Compared to a larger military hovercraft, perhaps 20 or 30 Carbon Infinity units could be purchased, to spread coverage along a border and provide a greater collective payload to transport more operatives and equipment. This greater coverage reduces the time to respond - a large single hovercraft might take hours to travel 200 miles. If a large hovercraft needs maintenance, it's game over, whereas a swarm of smaller units still provide operations, should one be out of action. Delivery times are also a factor - larger hovercraft can take years for delivery, the Carbon Infinity can be available within 12 weeks of order.
