India To Commence Design Of Second Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

India has sanctioned the construction of its largest Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC II) dubbed as INS Vishal which would weigh around 65,000 tons and would possess warfare capabilities.

The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has initially allocated Rs 30 Crore (US $4.7 million) for setting up a cell within the directorate of naval design, organizing specialist staff, and generally kick off on the long road to completion of work on what would be the third aircraft carrier - probably the state-of-the-art when it is eventually inducted into service.

This cell of the naval design directorate will then scour the globe for a design consultant who will augment their capacity for designing the IAC II.

The initial allocation will possibly last till the detailed project report stage, naval sources say. It will join the ranks of the navy in about a decade. The project is being accelerated because of INS Viraat’s decommissioning early next year.
