Russian Navy will get eight Borei class and six multi-purpose Yasen submarines by 2020, Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnichenko was quoted as saying by TASS on Tuesday.

Budnichenko said on the sidelines of the Army-2015 military-technical forum that the frames of a seventh Yasen submarine and an eighth Borei, which are the last ones in the series, will be laid next year.

"It is expected that the frame of an eight Borei will be laid in 2016. The construction of the next multi-role Yasen submarine is scheduled to begin in 2016, too, " Budnichenko said.

Borei Class is a Russian fourth-generation nuclear-powered missile submarine. It is intended to eventually replace the ageing Delta III and Typhoon Class submarines and become an important deterrent of the Russian Navy. The submarine is powered by an OK-650 nuclear reactor, AEU steam turbine, a shaft and a propeller.

The Yasen submarine's hull is built with low magnetic steel to reduce its magnetic signature. The submarine is smaller than the Akula Class vessels but possesses more fire power. The torpedo tubes, equipped to the submarines, have been slanted due to the large size of the spherical sonar. The design houses torpedo-launching systems behind the central station compartment.
