Russian Helicopters is working on implementation of new composites in design of new versions of Mi-8 military-transport helicopter, as well as light armor.

“We don’t see any reasons to replace Mi-8, because the vehicle is upgraded every 3 or 5 years. This is a proven platform and we’re working on its service life, life cycle, avionics, weapon system and we are also implementing new materials, including composites and light armor,” Russian Helicopters CEO Alexander Mikheev was quoted as saying by Ria Novosti.

He noted that the helicopter is still in demand in Russia and foreign countries. Composites have a number of advantages compared to traditional materials: high durability, resistance to high temperatures and chemical substances.
