India Approves $2.6 Billion Replacement of Air Defence Guns
The Indian Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved an INR 16,900 Crore (US $2.6 billion) proposal to acquire an initial 428 air defense guns to replace Swedish-made L-70 and Zu-23mm artillery guns for the Indian Army.
The DAC headed by defense minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday ‘revalidated’ the ‘acceptance of validity(AOV)’ for the long standing proposal to acquire new air defense guns under the ‘Buy and Make India’ project.
With the AOV in place the ministry is likely to float a tender for import of the initial lot of guns and the rest to be made in India. The Tatas, L&T, Punj Lloyd and Bharat Forge are major domestic companies that have shown interest in the project.
The Army's air defence guns have been on the modernization block for over a decade now.
