Russia has put eight intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) into service in its Strategic Missile Forces in the second quarter of 2015.

“The Russian SMF have also received seven mobile launchers and would carry out six space launches for military purposes by the end of the year,” Yuriy Borisov, Russian Deputy Minister of Defense was quoted as saying by Sputnik Thursday.

According to the deputy minister, the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces carried out two launches in the second quarter of 2015.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in June during the victory day had announced that Moscow will increase its nuclear weapons arsenal in a response to NATO’s alleged conventional military buildup in Europe amidst growing tensions over Ukraine.

He had also stated that his country would add 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to its nuclear arsenal “capable of overcoming any, even the most technically sophisticated, missile defense systems.”

“Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces will receive 50 new ICBMs in 2015,” he said.
