Japan’s Mitsubishi has sought partnering with BAE Systems, Babcock for the Australian $50 billion submarine project.
“Babcock and BAE had approached the consortium of Mitsubishi and Kawasaki with offer of help. Other British defense contractors may also be involved,” various media reports quoted Japanese government officials and a company source as saying.
Both Babcock and BAE systems have their base in Australia.
“With Mitsubishi Heavy taking the lead, we are gathering information from both Japanese and foreign companies in regard to Australian industry but we are unable to disclose any specific names,” a Japanese Defense Ministry spokesman said.
Japan was just responding to Australia’s desire to have as much local participation as possible in the project.
German ThyssenKrupp (TKMS), French DCNS are also in fray for the competition.
