South Korea has successfully tested its indigenous “Cheolmae II” long-range ground to air missile and is likely to go for mass production this year.

“The KM-SAM also known as Cheolmae II has been successfully tested with live ammunition at Hing Proving Ground. So Cheolmae II mass production is expected this year,” South Korean Defense Ministry announced today.

Cheolmae-2 is a Korean medium range SAM system that is developed by ADD with technical support from Almaz-Antey and Fakel.

The missile system has a battery of up to six 8 cell transport erector launchers, a passive electronically scanned array (PESA), X-band multi-function 3D phased radar and a fire command vehicle.

The missile was developed in Russia by Almaz Design Bureau along with Samsung Thales, LIG Nex1, Dosan DST. South Korea did the localization and industrialization. It is part of the South Korean three-tier aerial and missile defense system.
