Russian Aviadvigatel will showcase one of the PD-14 test engines at the MAKS-2015 airshow.

The indigenous fifth-generation engine for the Russian short and medium haul MS-21 aircraft uses composites as materials. The engine was developed as part of the Federal Target Program that overseas development of civil aircraft in Russia.

“Development of PD-14 engine has almost been completed. Flight tests onboard Il-76 flying testbed operated by the Gromov Flight Research Institute will be started this year,” Aviadvigatel said in a press statement Tuesday.

“The United Engine Corporationhas already manufactured 7 test PD-14 engines for Russian MS-21 airliner; four more ones will be manufactured this year,” Ria Novosti had quoted UEC CEO Vladislav Masalov as saying in March.

Apart from the commercial aircraft , PD-14 engines can be used for Sukhoi Superjet 100, An-148, Tu-204, Tu-214, Tu-334, Be-200, Il-96 and Sukhoi Superjet-130NG, the modified engines can be also used for IL-76 strategic airlifter currently in service with Russian, Indian, Ukranian Air Force.

“Such projects have been discussed during meeting of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin with Deputy Chairman of Russian Government Dmitry Rogozin, dedicated to the condition and further development of Russian engine-building industry,” The company said in the statement.

PD-14 is a turbofan engine featuring a direct fan drive (no gearbox) with a separate core and bypass duct discharge. The baseline PD-14 for MS-21-300 aircraft (developed by Irkut Corporation) has a thrust of 14 tons.
