Three Spanish companies have entered into a temporary joint venture to fulfill an army contract to develop six different technological projects to construct 400 Piranha 5 armored fighting vehicle.
Santa Barabara Sistemas, Indra and Sapa will develop a first research and development US $99 million contract to form a temporary venture, ‘UTE VCR 8x8’, the Spanish government said Friday.
The council of Ministers approved the pre-financial agreement. According to the contract, six different technologies related to security measures, situational awareness, long-range vision, fuel efficiency for engines, and command and control will be developed.
"This Piranha 5 of the Spanish Army will be an armored vehicle that will be able to be exported with a '100 percent Spanish' model," the Spanish Ministry of Defense was quoted as saying by Defense News Friday. This means the Spanish joint venture will have the "design authority" of the project.
