Raytheon Wins US Navy Contracts Worth $297 Million To Support Zumwalt-Class Destroyer, Phalanx Weapon Systems

Raytheon Co. Integrated Defense Systems has won a $255 million contract to procure mission system equipment for the  US Navy's new USS Lyndon B. Johnson.

USS Lyndon B. Johnson is to be the third and final ship of the Zumwalt-class destroyer.

This contract modification includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this award to $349 million, the US Department of Defense announced Thursday.

Work is expected to be completed by October 2019.

In another announcement, Raytheon Co., Tucson, Arizona, has also won a $42 million modification contract to exercise options to support the Phalanx, SeaRAM, and land-based Phalanx weapon systems.

As per terms of the contract, Raytheon is required to provide design agent engineering and technical support services for the weapon systems.

Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) is a fast-reaction terminal defense against low- and high-flying, high-speed maneuvering anti-ship missile threats that have penetrated all other defenses.  The CIWS is an integral element of the Fleet Defense In-Depth concept and the Ship Self-Defense Program.  Operating either autonomously or integrated with a combat system, it is an automatic terminal defense weapon system designed to detect, track, engage, and destroy anti-ship missile threats penetrating outer defense envelopes.

This contract combines purchases for the U.S. government and the governments of Turkey; Australia ; Japan; Canada; United Kingdom; Korea; Bahrain; Pakistan; and Egypt under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the US DoD statement said.  

Work will be completed by October 2016.
