Peru Signs Elbit and ThyssenKrupp For U209-class Submarines Upgrade

SIMA Peru has signed contracts with Elbit Systems and ThyssenKrupp to modernize its four U209-1200 submarines.

The upgrade project was initiated in 2015. Submarines included in the upgrade include the BAP Angamos (SS-31), BAP Antofagasta (SS-32), BAP Pisagua (SS-33), and BAP Chipana (SS-34), Forecast International reported.

The agreement with ThyssenKrupp, which is the prime contractor on the U209 class, will cover technical advice and assistance on separating the hull into two parts, enabling Peru to conduct a major modernization or replacement of multiple systems including command and control, propulsion, navigation, weapons, mechanical and electrical, hydraulic, and electronic and optical.

The contract with Elbit will cover the acquisition of electronic warfare systems for the four submarines.

Peru currently operates six submarines. Two have already been updated and will remain operational in their current form until 2023. The remaining four are now undergoing an upgrade process that will extend their service lives and improve capabilities.
