The Spanish Ministry of Defense has approved the Critical Design Review (CDR) of its S-80 submarine being built by Navantia shipyard in Cartagena.

It is very important for the future of the program and Shipyard milestone, since it involves permanently close the submarine design and allows the transition to production. In this regard, in April and expanding the pressure hull of the submarine and the 5 sections of the submarine was completed already available for the incorporation of its internal structures, the company said in a statement last Friday.

The approval by the Ministry of Defence of the CDR is to also demonstrate the technical feasibility of the submarine program. Achieving this milestone means finally overcome design problems suffered by the program in the past. The program therefore is channeled again and highly advanced transformation Shipyard, which allows face the future with optimism.

The director of the Program Shipyard and S-80 Submarines, Admiral José Manuel Sanjurjo Jul, stressed the importance of the approved milestone. The program design and construction of the submarine S-80 is a complex engineering project that is being undertaken at the national level. Therefore, the technical difficulties that have appeared throughout the program are normal in the development and implementation of a project that requires unprecedented technological solutions. A project like this demands placed on the border of numerous technologies, which means taking risks.

By overcoming the CDR is given by completed the redesign of the submarine, thus happens to have a greater length and a larger displacement, without having lost the skills that make you an conventional submarine of the next generation.

The possibility of a national design in the construction of submarines supposed technological independence in one aspect of the essential national defense. In addition, the success of the program has several aspects: on the one hand, national defense, because at stake is the survival of the submarine weapon; on the other, the technological image Spanish; Third, the industrial and technological weight Navantia Cartagena has for the Region of Murcia.
