Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has won US $53 million to refit Portuguese Navy’s two Tridente class (Type 209PN) attack submarines.

The first submarine, NRP Tridente will be refitted in Germany in the next two years while TKMS and Portugese Arsenal do Alfeite will together refit NRP Arpao locally between 2018 and 2020. The contracts were authorized by the Portuguese Ministry of National Defense, IHS Janes reported Wednesday.

Systems Sunlight of Greece was also recently awarded a contract by the Portuguese Navy to replace the main batteries of the two Tridente-class boats.

The upgrade programme was laid out in Portugal's latest Military Programming Law, approved in May 2015.
