Russia Launches Secured Intranet

Russia has launched Secured Intranet, equipped with a secured email service that allows transmission of classified information and documents for military communications.

In every military unit there are servers that encrypt information, divide it into several packages and pass it on. Further, access to the server rooms is strictly limited, Sputnik News reported today.

"The last stage of the work was completed in late summer of this year, the network is fully operational now. At present, we plan to extend it by installing additional terminals in military units and institutions," the source said as quoted by the Russian Izvestia newspaper.

The network is not connected to the Internet, while non-certified flash drives and external hard drives cannot be plugged into the computers that are part of the intranet.

The military system partially uses infrastructure rented from cable network provider Rostelecom, but part of the network reportedly relies on the Defense Ministry's own infrastructure.
