Russian MiG-29K jet crashed during an exercise flight after taking off from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser, the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.

"An aviation accident with carrier-based fighter MIG-29K occurred during exercise flights as a result of a technical fault during the approach landing a few kilometers from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser," the statement said.

The pilot of the carrier-based aircraft was safely ejected.

However, the Russian aircraft carrier group will continue its activity in the Mediterranean Sea as planned after the incident.
