US Navy’s Third Ford-class Nuclear Powered Supercarrier To Get Advanced Arresting Gear

General Atomics will manufacture and install an advanced arresting gear for the third next-generation Gerald Ford-class aircraft carrier (CVN 80) under a $195 million contract.

The advanced arresting gear is the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS).

"General Atomics, San Diego, California, is being awarded $195,180,206 to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract to exercise an option for the manufacture, assembly, inspection, test and checkout of the advanced arresting gear for the CVN 80 shipset," the US Department of Defense said in a press release Thursday.

Work is expected to be completed in September 2027.  

The CVN 80 is the Enterprise, according to published Navy documents. As designed, the USS Enterprise will feature displacement of 100,000 tons and length measuring 1,100 feet with a beam of 134 feet and draught to 39 feet.
