Cameroon Army Vessel Sinks, 34 Soldiers Missing

A Cameroon army vessel carrying 37 soldiers from the elite Rapid Intervention Brigade capsized Sunday off the country's southwestern coast.

The logistics boat, belonging to the Rapid Intervention Brigade, which has fought Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram in recent years capsized early Sunday morning between the city of Limbe and Bakassi, France24.com reported Monday.

So far, only three soldiers have been resuced. Besides troops, the boat was also transporting equipment for construction work at a military base on the Bakassi Peninsula, where the Brigade has helped to bring security after previous spate of hostage-takings.

The accident, at the northern end of the coast near the village of Debunsha, is suspected to have been caused by rough waters but investigations are going on.

Cameroon has deployed thousands of soldiers to its Far North region to beat back a Boko Haram insurgency that has killed more than 20,000 people in the Lake Chad region and displaced more than 2.7 million.
