German Navy Orders Additional Five K130 Corvettes

German Navy has ordered additional five corvettes under a contract worth US$2.4 billion awarded to a consortium of shipbuilders led by Luerrsen Werft.

The German defense procurement agency, BAAINBw said in a press release last week that the additional proven warships will keep up with its increased responsibilities within the NATO alliance.

"We are procuring tried and tested ships with upgraded technology," explained BAAINBw's vice president, Armin Schmidt-Franke, on the occasion of the signing of the contract on 12 September in Koblenz. "We are enabling the German Navy to meet its increased commitments within the alliance with ships that have already proved their value in numerous assignments," added the Vice-President of BAAINBw.

The new K130 corvettes are expected to be delivered from 2022 to 2025. The navy already operates five Type 130-class corvettes.
