Bechtel’s plant machinery company has received almost $230 million cost-plus-fixed-fee, sole-source contract to provide nuclear propulsion components to the U.S. Navy.

“Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc., Monroeville, Pennsylvania, is being awarded a $229,749,836 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-17-C-2110) for naval nuclear propulsion components,” the US Defense of Department said Wednesday.

According to the statement, Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc.will carry out work in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and Schenectady, New York, under the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program. The statement did not provide an estimated date of completion for the project.

The Navy uses nuclear propulsion capabilities to power a variety of its vessels, including submarines and aircraft carriers. The solution allows ships to operate by drawing power from a small nuclear power plant installed on the vessel.

The Navy will obligate $102,850,688 from the military branch’s fiscal 2018 shipbuilding and conversion funds and funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

Bechtel manages two laboratories and an engineering organization that conducts research, development, design, acquisition management, reactor operator training and spent-fuel management for the Navy.

Bechtel has also received $30 million worth contract in July 2017 for similar work.
