The United Arab Emirates has closed the deal to acquire two French-made Gowind-class corvettes during France's Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, visit to Abu Dhabi this week.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deal Thursday, stating “this decision further strengthens the strategic and military partnership between France and the United Arab Emirates, and represents a new export success for France”.

In addition to the two new ships for UAE, Naval Group already has contracts for the construction of ten Gowind corvettes for two navies.

Multiple defence companies had lined up to sell their versions of the surveillance vessel to the UAE, including Italy's Fincantieri, ahead of Thursday's announcement.

Egypt has meanwhile received the first of four Gowind corvettes it ordered from Naval Group, the company's first sale of the monohull.
