The UAE Armed Forces will purchase MK-82 and MK-84 bombs from a Turkish firm, Chemical and Mechanical Industries Corporation.
A contract to this effect worth AED 74 million (USD20 million) was announced at the Dubai Air show today.
The Mark 82 (Mk 82) is an unguided, low-drag general-purpose bomb, part of the United States Mark 80 series. The explosive filling is usually tritonal, though other compositions have sometimes been used.
The Turkish Tübitak-Sage manufactures Hassas Güdüm Kiti (HGK) or GPS/INS Precision Guidance Kit that converts 2000-lb Mark 84 bombs into smart weapons. It enables precision strike capability in all weather conditions with long range at a dispersion of 6 m (20 ft).
The Mark 77 bomb (MK-77) is a US 750-pound (340 kg) air-dropped incendiary bomb carrying 110 U.S. gallons of a fuel gel mix. MK-77s were used by the United States Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The MK-82 and MK-74 are used in bunker busting operations and as warheads for medium-range missiles.
