India not to Recognize US CATSAA, will Go Ahead with S-400 Buy

India has rejected a United States delegation's demand that it should not buy the S-400 air defence system from Russia in view of Washington's Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

"We have told the US Congress delegation [that visited India] that this is US law and not a UN law," The Tribune reported quoting Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharman Friday.

She didn't give a specific time when the deal for the missile system will be signed. "It will happen soon. But when it is going to be finalised, I can't say," Sitharaman told reporters.

On July 1, 2018 the Indian Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared the $5.5 billion agreement to purchase S-400 air defense missile systems from Russia with minor changes.

The deal gained preliminary approval from the DAC in 2016. However, the final document, which was discussed during the recent commercial negotiations with Russia, still required some adjustment.
