BAE Systems Wins $146 Million To Repair, Modernize US Navy Cruiser Gettysburg

The US Navy has awarded a $146 million worth contract to BAE Systems’ ship repair subsidiary to repair and modernize the US Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser Gettysburg, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

"BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Virginia is awarded a $146,342,267 firm-fixed-price contract for the execution of USS Gettysburg fiscal 2018 modernization period availability," the release said.  The contract also includes options that could bring its total value to $151.3 million.

The contract will cover combination of maintenance, modernization and repair work on the Gettysburg, the release explained.

BAE will provide the facilities and human resources capable of completing, coordinating and integrating multiple areas of ship maintenance, repair and modernization, the release said. “This is a “long-term” availability and was competed on a coast-wide (West coast) basis without limiting the place of performance to the vessel’s homeport,” it said.

Work will be performed in Norfolk, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by March 2020, the statement added.

This awarded contract is part of the work on a class of guided-missile cruisers whose weapons and computer systems are undergoing upgrades to ensure they reach their 35-year service life.

The modernization program for the cruiser includes updates to computer and display equipment as well as electrical and mechanical systems. Weapons and sensor sets will be modified to improve submarine-combat capabilities, the Navy said, and electro-optical systems will be added that can monitor the ship's surroundings without radar emissions.
