Rheinmetall has received a $59 million contract to supply nearly 70,000 cartridges of MK281 MOD3 40mm grenade practice ammunition to US Marines.
The company is scheduled to start the production by the third quarter of 2019, Rheinmetall said in a statement Monday.
The non-toxic cartridge employs target marking and is fired from a MK19 belt fed automatic grenade launcher.
The MK281 design reduces customer costs by eliminating unexploded ordnance and range fires. Furthermore, it permits users to practice fire-and-manoeuvre operation, the company said.
