South Korea will buy two Israeli-made Green Pine Block C radar early warning radar systems to boost its medium-range air defense, Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said today.

Seoul's defense project promotion committee approved the project worth 330 billion won (US$292 million) to buy Green Pine Block C radar systems produced by ELTA, a subsidiary of the defense firm Israel Aerospace Industries, DAPA said in a release, Yohnap News reported.

The two radars are in addition to two more ordered earlier. The new radar systems will be introduced in the armed forces in the early 2020s.

The Block C radar is known to have a detection range of more than 800 kilometers, compared with the 600 km range of the Block B that the South Korean military possesses.

The radar will help Seoul to track incoming missiles from China. With the North Korean missile threat receding, South Korea has changed its procurement proprieties from longer range missile detection tomedium-range multiple threat detection.
