Russia Accused of Cyber-Attacks on Czech Foreign Ministry

In the annual Security Information Service (BIS) report published Monday, the Czech Republic has accused Russian Intelligence services of carrying out last year’s cyber-attacks targeting the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Russian espionage group of hackers APT28 that was accused of carrying out attacks in Germany and the United States previously; are partly responsible for carrying out the attacks. The group is associated with Russian authorities, UAwire reported Tuesday.

The attackers broke into the Czech MFA’s information systems and gained access to over 150 employees email addresses, copying letters and attachments to them. The cybercriminals got hold of “data that could be used for future attacks, as well as a list of potential targets in virtually all important state institutions,” the report said.

“All the findings make it clear that this was the espionage campaign, originating from the FSB, the Russian intelligence service, and APT28 / Sofacy, which is linked to the Russian military intelligence, the GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate),”  BIS report was quoted by the UAWire Tuesday.
