Tiruchi Assault Rifle Handed Over To Indian Border Security Force

Tiruchi Assault Rifle (TAR), developed by the India's Ordnance Factory Tiruchirapalli (OFT) has been handed over to the Border Security Force for the first time on Sunday.

The 7.62×39 mm rifle had undergone a series of tests and had been supplied earlier to police departments of states. It has been approved for use by the paramilitary force for the first time.

The rifle is touted to be an improved version of INSAS rifle and it is similar to the AK-47 series. The weapon is suitable for paramilitary forces deployed for quelling insurgency.

The weapon has a maximum range of 500 metres. In automatic mode, it fires 600 rounds per minute. The design is compatible for attachment with a 40mm under barrel Grenade Launcher UBGL and 40x46 mm under barrel Grenade Launcher UBGL-M6, according to OFT.

The rifle manufactured in three variants: fixed butt, side foldable butt and under folding uses ammunition made by Ordnance Factory, Varangoan, Bhushawal.
