A massive fire broke out at the parking area during the Aero India 2019 airshow, bringing the aerial displays to a halt temporarily.
The airshow is likely to resume later in the afternoon.
Nearly 300 cars were gutted in the inferno that broke out at Gate 5 just outside the airshow venue in Yelahanka air base, Bengaluru, southern India.
The cause of the fire is presently unknown.
Ten fire tenders that rushed to the spot, took nearly an hour to douse the fire. Fear of an aircraft crash were present initially, although no flight was seen anywhere near its vicinity.
“Today morning around 11:55 hrs a fire broke out at one of the Parking Areas of AeroIndia2019. The parking area is located well away from AeroIndia venue. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of fire,” Defense spokesperson @SpokespersonMoD tweeted.
On February 20, two Surya Kiran Hawk aircraft belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF) collided mid-air while rehearsing for AeroIndia-2019, killing one pilot and injuring two others.
