India is likely to equip its Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters with Israeli Spice-2000 bombs in the near future.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is reportedly running trials to mount and fire the Spice-2000 smart bombs from Sukhoi jets.
"We have carried out trials of the Spice-2000 bombs on the Su-30 aircraft and its integration would mean that a large fleet of the IAF would be able to drop these munitions," top Air Force sources told India Today.
The country had acquired over 200 bombs from Israeli firm Rafael few years ago. The only aircraft compatible with the Israeli bombs right now is the French-origin Dassault Mirage-2000.
“After a few more trials, the Su-30 fleet would be equipped with these bombs which rely on coordinates and satellite pictures of the target to home in and destroy the intended targets,” ANI quoted sources as saying.
The Spice-2000 bombs are a derivative of Popeye air-to-surface missile and are fed with coordinates and satellite pictures of the target to home in and destroy it. The EO/GPS-guided guidance kit can transform unguided bombs into precision-guided bombs.
