Iran has shot down a US military “spy” drone flying over southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, on Thursday.
Tehran’s IRNA news agency identified the American drone as the RQ-4 Global Hawk. However, a US official said that the drone shot down by Iran in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz is the US Navy’s MQ-4C Triton.
Navy Captain Bill Urban, the spokesman for the US military’s Central Command, said on Wednesday that no US aircraft were flying over Iran, reports Reuters.
The US military has in recent days confirmed an attempt by Iran to shoot down a US drone last week, as well as the successful shooting down of one on June 6 by Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen.
“Our airspace is our red line and Iran has always responded and will continue to respond strongly to any country that violates our airspace,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security council as saying.
