The United States on Tuesday approved the sale of large aircraft infrared countermeasure systems and related support to Qatar for $86 million.

Qatar requested to buy two of AN/AAQ-24(V)N large aircraft infrared countermeasure (LAIRCM) missile defence systems and support, according to a Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) statement.

Those systems, produced by Northrop Grumman, will be fitted onto a pair of 747-800 head-of-state aircraft.

The LAIRCM system offers protection to aircrews by detecting, tracking and jamming incoming infrared threats automatically. If an incoming threat is detected, LAIRCM activates a high-intensity laser-based countermeasure system to track and defeat the missile.

Also included in the package are 12 Guardian Laser Turret Assemblies, seven LAIRCM system processor replacements, 23 missile warning sensors and a variety of back-end support equipment.
