Turkey’s ATAK FAZ-2 Gunship Makes Maiden Flight

An upgraded version of Turkey’s ATAK combat helicopter, the ATAK FAZ-2, equipped with electronic warfare (EW) and other systems, made its first flight on November 13.

“ATAK's FAZ-2 version equipped with laser warning receiver and other electronic warfare systems successfully completed its first flight,” Ismail Demir, President of Turkey’s Defense Industries, announced in a tweet.

Key differences between the two versions is the addition of EW systems, enhanced Radar Warning Receiver, Radio Frequency Jammer and Laser Warning Receiver capabilities in the Phase-2 helicopters.

According to Demir, the helicopters will be delivered to the Turkish military in late 2020, following completion of tests. “We aim to deliver ATAK FAZ-2 helicopters after mid-2020 after detailed tests,” the head of Turkey's Defense Industry Directorate said.

In the first phase, 21 FAZ-2 helicopters will be delivered, local media reported.

Turkish Aerospace Industries was awarded a contract to develop ATAK-2 gunship, with twice the take-off weight as the ATAK-1, in February of this year. The helicopter is expected to make its first flight within five years.
