Turkish Navy to get First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier in 2020

The Turkish navy will receive the country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, TCG Anadolu, next year.

“Our naval forces will get the TCG Anadolu, Turkey’s largest domestically-built warship, in 2020,” said İsmail Demir, chairman of the Defense Industry Presidency (SSB).

A consortium of Istanbul's Sedef Shipyard and Spanish Navantia won the tender for the LPD/LHD (Landing Platform Dock/ Landing Helicopter Dock) project of the Turkish Navy in 2015. TCG Anadolu (L-408) is said to have the same design as that of the Spain’s SPS Juan Carlos I (L-61) multipurpose amphibious assault ship-aircraft carrier.

The 232-meter-wide giant ship will be capable of moving 9,000 miles (14,500 kilometers) without refueling. It will carry four mechanized, two air-cushioned and two personnel landing vehicles, as well as aircraft, helicopters and drones. The boat will have a displacement of about 27,000 tons.

The ship will feature a Turkish combat management system, namely the GENESIS-ADVENT, which will be integrated by Aselsan and Havelsan. Aircraft Landing is assisted by Leonardo SPN-720 Precision Approach Radar.
