Iran has revealed a missile made of composite engine components named 'Ra’d-500 (Lightning-500), that has a small radar cross signature and a range twice that of its Fateh-110 missile (range 200km-300km).

"The missile takes advantage of two types of composite engine blocks and adjustable nozzle," chief commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami was quoted as saying by PressTV during the unveiling ceremony on Sunday.

The engine components are made of carbon fibers, that has the ability to withstand pressure of 100 bar and a temperature of 3,000°C, while reducing the overall weight of the missile.

The missile paves the way for the production of new satellite carriers operating on solid fuel and allows Iranian surface-to-surface missiles to penetrate various kinds of missile shields by projecting a small cross-section on the radar screen, the report said.

"By developing adjustable nozzle technology, it is possible to control solid-fuel missiles beyond the atmosphere in spacecrafts, satellite carriers and anti-armor missiles," said the commander of the IRGC’s Aerospace Division.

"The composite body of the new missile has been designed in a way that it can be used in surface-to-surface and air defense missiles," he added.
