The Russian Forces have managed to incapacitate combat drones and intercept radio networks using their latest Electronic Warfare (EW systems) during an exercise held recently.

“EW units of the Eastern Military District worked out the suppression of radio networks and unmanned aerial vehicles of a conditional enemy using the latest radio interference stations Borisoglebsk-2, Rtut-BM, Lorandit and other special equipment,” the defense ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

Electromagnetic radiation from the simulated enemy’s communication systems were collected, and analysed for intelligence. The network used by the adversary was identified and blocked. The network data, location of command posts and communication centres were then forwarded to the other units for further conditional destruction, the ministry explained.

Russia’s Electronic Warfare Systems:

  • The Borisoglebsk-2 EW system was first delivered to the Russian forces in June 2018. The system is designed to jam satellite communication and radio navigation systems and detect, locate and jam tactical-level command and control radio networks and communication lines.
  • The Rtut-BM (Mercury-BM) advanced EW system is designed to protect soldiers and equipment from artillery fire, in case the artillery is equipped with proximity fuses. In order to cause irreparable damage, proximity fuse must explode at the height of 3-5 meters. This system affects proximity-fused ammunition making it explode at a safe height, which keeps the troops intact.
  • The small RP-377LA Lorandit is used for reconnaissance of radio propagation sources, jamming and counter-jamming. It is capable of jamming a waveband of three megahertz to three gigahertz.
