Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) backed by Turkey and Qatar reclaimed control of Tripoli International Airport from Haftar militia.

On Wednesday, GNA’s military spokesperson Mohammed Kanunu said they launched an offensive to recapture the airport, located 21 miles from Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

"The airport has been completely liberated. Our heroic forces are pursuing the remnants of [Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa] Haftar's militants in the direction of Qasr bin Ghashir," the Kanunu said in a statement.

Haftar’s forces had been using the airport as a base to launch airborne operations. The port was closed to passenger air travel since 2014, with its replacement being Mitiga military airfield.

Later in the day, the Libyan Army further announced that it launched an operation into Tarhuna, southeast of Tripoli, from three points. The spokesperson of the Burkan al-Ghadab (Volcano of Rage) operation told Anadolu Agency that the operations against Haftar militia were ongoing, adding that the army is determined to seize the last Haftar-occupied province in the west.
