A civilian sport utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into a US Army armored vehicle in Pocheon, north of Seoul, on Sunday night, killing four South Koreans.
The Army vehicle was on its way to Cheorwon base, Gangwon Province, after the completion of a drill when the SUV rear-ended it. The SUV's engine was damaged beyond recognition due to the impact of the crash, while the armored vehicle's caterpillar tracks on the right side were damaged, Yonhap reported today.
While the civilians were pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital, one American soldier sustained minor injuries.
"United States Forces Korea (USFK), Eighth Army and 2nd Infantry ROK-US Combined Division are fully cooperating with the KNP (Korean National Police) investigation. USFK offers its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased following this tragic accident," USFK said in a statement issued on Monday.
US Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris tweeted on Monday: “Joining USFK in expressing deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the Korean civilians who died following the tragic accident last evening near Pocheon.”
