French Police: Paris ‘Explosion’ Was a Fighter Jet Sonic Boom

The deafening sound that was heard across Paris today noon was caused by a sonic boom as a military jet broke the speed of sound.

“A very loud noise was heard in Paris and in the Paris region. It was not an explosion, it was a fighter jet crossing the sound barrier,” Paris Police tweeted, urging people to stop calling emergency phone lines.

French Air-Defence and Air-Operations Command (CDAOA) reported loss of radio contact with a civilian plane heading towards Saint-Brieuc in northwestern France.

To quickly reach the aircraft, French Air Force Rafale jet was cleared to fly at supersonic speeds at high altitude at 11:52 a.m. Radio contact with the civilian jet has now been established,” CDAOA added.
