Lockheed to Support U.A.E. THAAD Batteries for $255M

Lockheed Martin has won a contract valued $255 million to support U.A.E.’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries.

In a statement today, the U.S. Department of Defense said: “Under this follow-on contract, the contractor will provide maintenance and sustainment for two THAAD batteries for UAE.  The maintenance and sustainment scope of work includes providing logistics management, logistics product database, training, missile and ground repair and return, hardware/software development and sustainment, hardware in the loop, engineering services, missile field surveillance program and country unique specialty engineering for FMS client.”

The U.A.E. is currently the only Middle East country to possess THAAD system; it is also the first GCC country to deploy the Patriot PAC-3.

While Washington has approved the sale of THAAD systems to Saudi Arabia a couple of years ago for $15 billion, it was only last year that Pentagon awarded Lockheed Martin $1 billion to begin work regarding the sale. Under the multi-billion dollar contract, Riyadh will receive 44 THAAD batteries, including 360 missile interceptors.
