Unidentified Drone Drops Explosives near U.S. Base within Bagdad Airport Complex

An unidentified drone carrying explosives reportedly hit the wall of a U.S. military facility at the Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on Monday.

The incident comes a week after rockets hit Balad airbase located in the Iraqi province of Salahuddin where U.S. contractors are based; and another missile hit Victory military base used by U.S. military aircraft.

A roadside bomb targeted a U.S. convoy on Salahuddin Highway, North of Baghdad, on Sunday. Hours later, another explosive device hit a U.S. convoy on Nasiriyah Highway, Iraq-based Shafaq News reported.

U.S. offers reward leading to arrest those responsible for rocket attack on base

On June 10, Iraq’s joint operations command said one attack near a military base next to Baghdad’s airport was spearheaded by three explosives-laden drones. One of the UAVs was intercepted and destroyed.

Soon after the attacks, the U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program said it is offering a reward of up to $3 million for information on attacks against Americans in Iraq.

More than a dozen rocket strikes have targeted bases and Baghdad’s highly fortified Green Zone since U.S. President Joe Biden assumed office this year. At least 10 people have been killed, including two foreign contractors.

At least three foreign subcontractors and one Iraqi subcontractor have been wounded in attacks on Balad air base. Lockheed Martin withdrew its staff from the base in May amid concerns about the safety of its personnel.
