The Israel Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced Wednesday that it has signed an NIS 100 Million (US$ 30.5 million) agreement with Israel Shipyards, under which four ‘Sheldag' type 5 security vessels will be supplied to the country’s Navy.

The 'Sheldag' Mark 5 is a fast cruise ship, with the ability to maneuver and operate the world's most advanced weapon systems. The propulsion ships will provide the Navy with a broad response to the threats developing on the naval battlefield in the coming years. The length of the vessel will be 32.5 meters, it weighs 95 tons and its speed is 40 knots.

Defense Minister Bnei Gantz was quoted in an MoD release as saying: "the purchase of ships made in Israel indicates the strengthening of the defense industry in Israel.”

Vice President and Head of the Procurement Administration, Avi Dadon said: "after about 15 years we are once again building warships in Israeli shipyards. I welcome the partnership, which will strengthen both security and industry and employment in the north of the country."

Chairman of the Israel Shipyards, Sami Katsav: "This significant order constitutes a seal of approval for the company as a supplier of advanced vessels to governments and security forces around the world and will assist defense exports from Israel."
