Raytheon Co. is being awarded a $259,904,116 modification to previously awarded contract for MK15 Phalanx Close-In-Weapon System (CIWS) Block 1B upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and associated hardware. Phalanx CIWS is a fast reaction terminal defense against low and high flying, high-speed maneuvering anti-ship missile threats that have penetrated all other ships' defenses. The CIWS is an integral element of the fleet defense in-depth concept and the Ship Self-Defense Program. Phalanx CIWS is currently installed on approximately 187 USN ships and is in use in 20 foreign navies. The Phalanx Block 1B CIWS weapon systems are also being installed on low-boy trailers with self contained diesel electric power and cooling water. This configuration of the Phalanx CIWS is the MK 15 MOD 29 land-based Phalanx Weapon System and has been deployed to Iraq.
