MK54 MOD 1 Lightweight Torpedo

The U.S. Navy today announced a $27.6 million contract to Raytheon for MK54 lightweight torpedoes.

This contract covers production of the MK54 lightweight torpedo MOD 0 and MOD 1 common part kits and spare torpedo components, a U.S. Department of Defense release said.

This contract combines purchases for the U.S. government (67%); and the governments of Spain and Brazil (33%) under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.

MK54 Lightweight Torpedo

The MK 54 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) torpedo is designed for launch from surface ships, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. It is used in both deep and shallow waters, as well as in acoustic environments. MK 54 torpedoes are equipped with processing algorithms that help them in detecting false targets or countermeasures and then hunt the identified threats.

The torpedo’s TG-6000 IMU guidance system enables accurate 3D measurement of motion and acceleration. The active or passive acoustic homing system is fitted to the torpedo for guidance capabilities.

MK 54 is powered by a reciprocating external combustion engine, which burns Otto II liquid fuel. It allows the torpedo to cruise at a speed of about 74kmph.

With a new propulsion system and warhead, the MK 54 MOD 2 torpedo is expected to be delivered in 2026.
